Process
Actively observing - is the initial step in my process. I’m seeking the wild and the precious. The butterfly on a milkweed plant may not be impacted by my lack of notice, but I may be.
Steps
-
Sketch and Carve
Initially, every idea is sketched and then transferred onto a block of lino. Using sharp carving tools, I remove or reduce everything (meaning all the negative space) that will not be inked for print.
-
Ink
Ink is rolled onto the carved block with a brayer. Balance is key. Applying too much ink may diminish finer details. While too little may result in an uneven print.
-
Print and peel
Using a hand barron or wooden press, the paper is delicately pressed onto the freshly inked block. After transferring ink to paper, the print is ready to be peeled away from the block to reveal the result.
